When Lance Berkman crumpled to the ground in the second inning after leaning forward to receive a routine throw from Rafael Furcal, you could almost hear an exasperated John Mozeliak sigh in frustration. Berkman’s later description of the undiagnosed injury didn’t exactly inspire confidence: he said the knee felt “crunchy.” That should be the description of fresh potato chips, not a joint on the human body. It’s safe to say that Berkman is probably headed for a very long, possibly season-ending stint on the disabled list.
Berkman joins a list that includes Scott Linebrink (shoulder), Jon Jay (shoulder), Kyle McClellan (elbow), Chris Carpenter (shoulder/arm), and Allen Craig (hamstring). Carlos Beltran (knee) is one wrong move from the disabled list, too. And let’s not forget that Rafael Furcal and David Freese have bodies made of angel hair held together by unicorn wishes. Wasting a good start from Jake Westbrook with errors is frustrating, and losing is never fun. However, a devastating injury to Lance Berkman cast a pall over the entire game and puts the entire season in jeopardy. As viewed by the naked eye, most Cardinal fans agree that Jaime Garcia has the mental and emotional toughness of lukewarm Jell-O. We’ve seen it too many times: a call goes against him, he pouts, and subsequently gives up runs. His OCD breakdowns are already legend; imperceptible fluctuations in the barometer could send Garcia into a death spiral of self-doubt and concern. Starts are missed because Garcia slept in sheets with a low thread count. Garcia considers suicide whenever the hotel serves him orange juice with fewer than 97 fragments of pulp. Continue Reading »

In a move reminiscent of last spring’s release of Ryan Franklin and Miguel Batista, John Mozeliak today hacked off the gangrenous limb known as J.C. Romero. Although Cardinal fans assumed Mozeliak made the move based on the fact that Romero failed to retire any hitter he faced, the truth is that Mozeliak released Romero because Romero’s eyebrows were causing a grotesque distraction in the clubhouse. In honor of Mother’s Day, the Cardinals gave away a David Freese bobblehead, North Star ice cream, and an entire series against the Atlanta Braves. Lance Lynn‘s first troubled start and some truly awful at-bats with runners in scoring position led to a disappointing 7-4 loss to the Braves in front of a packed and raucous Busch Stadium.
